Ginkgo biloba is an antioxidant herb, which is extracted from the ancient Chinese maiden hair tree. It has been traced back to 3000 B.C as a traditional Chinese medicine and is one of the biggest selling drugs for circulatory problems in Germany (over 10 million prescriptions were written last year).

There are a number of compounds which may be isolated from Ginkgo biloba. Terpene lactones account for 6% and Ginkgo-flavone glycosides account for 24%. Ginkgo-flavone glycosides inhibit a substance called Platelet Activating Factor (PAF), which is responsible for platelet aggregation and clot formation. PAF is also involved in many inflammatory and allergic reactions. These substances are shown to increase arterial blood supply, especially to the brain, enhancing tissue utilisation of oxygen and glucose.

Ginkgo biloba has been used to treat a variety of disorders. Its primary use is as an adjunctive therapy for improving arterial circulation. Although it has been shown to be effective in cold hands and feet, chilblains, prevention and recovery from strokes, poor short-term memory, Raynaud's disease, Senile Dementia, tinnitus/dizziness and mastalgia (painful breasts).

Ginkgo biloba is best taken in as 100 mg standardised extract containing 24 mg of Ginkgo flavone-glycosides and 6 mg terpene lactones, the active ingredients. Taking 1 tablet per day is recommended for general well being, 2 tablets per day has been shown to give a therapeutic benefit.

Ginkgo biloba is best taken in as 100 mg standardised extract containing 24 mg of Ginkgo flavone-glycosides and 6 mg terpene lactones as in Bio-Biloba (Pharma Nord).

There are many scientific papers that show the beneficial effects of Ginkgo biloba, particularly in the field of arterial circulation. New research documents its use in degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.

There are no known drug interactions or other contra-indications. However, Ginkgo Biloba should NOT be taken alongside drugs which are already influencing the circulation, eg, aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel (Plavix®), dipyridamole (Persantin®), etc. Suitable for Vegans
