Structural similarity to beta-carotene, but with a strong functional difference: Astaxanthin R-donds occur in natural astaxanthin when one or more fatty acids or peptides are attached to the molecule. Unique chemistry of natural astaxanthin allows spanning of cell membranes, crossing blood-brain barrier, and bonding directly with muscle tissue. Beta-Carotene and lycopene do not have these bonding sites.

Benefits of Astaxanthin:

1. Natures strongest antioxidant,

2. Reduced both severity and duration of Carpal tunnel syndrome,

3. Mitigates soreness and joint pain,

4. Retards and prevents sunburn and protects the skin from sun damage,

5. Prevents joint and muscle soreness after exercise; reduces tennis elbow pain,

6 Significant improvement in cholesterol and triglyceride levels,

7. Significant improvements in wrinkles, skin elasticity and smoothness, moisture, and spots.

Astaxanthin is thought to reduce inflammation by quenching reactive oxygen species, as a powerful antioxidant, it may also protect cell and mitochondrial (cell) membranes from oxidative damage. It may dramatically decrease DNA damage and as as one of only three antioxidants that crosses the blood brain barrier, it may assist in maintaining neurological and eye health. It may therefore be of particular benefit for eye degeneration as a person gets older, as well as damage to the eyes caused by some health conditions. Astaxanthin is also thought to boost the immune system by increasing the number of antibody-producing cells. Additionally it may stimulate the immune system by increasing the total number of T-cells, tests indicates it considerably increases energy levels, and can assist an athlete with extra energy and stamina. It may inhibit lipid per oxidation (a form of free radical damage to cells) that may cause plaque formation in the circulatory system, which can lead to heart attacks and strokes. It is also thought to reduce the chances of the initiation of tumorigenesis (the formation of tumours) in the tongue, oral cavity, large bowel, bladder, and breast. It is thought to protects the eyes and skin from UV A and B damage by quenching singlet and triplet oxygen, and finally it may reduce the number of new and abnormal cells in the liver.

Astaxanthin is a carotenoid (plant colouring), found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, crayfish, crustaceans, and the feathers of some birds. Astaxanthin can be extracted from all of these sources and can also be synthesised. Synthetic Astaxanthin is used as a natural food colourant and is used for example to make farmed salmon redder in colour. The Astaxanthin that is derived from micro algae, such as Bio-Xanthin Astaxanthin is by far the most potent. Like many carotenoids, it is a colourful, fat/oil-soluble pigment. Astaxanthin, unlike some carotenoids, does not convert to Vitamin A (retinol) in the human body. Too much Vitamin A is toxic for a human, but Astaxanthin is not. It is a powerful anti oxidant which is 50 times more powerful than beta carotene and 500 times more powerful than vitamin E.
