Selenium is a trace element, which was first regarded as a poison until it was shown to prevent degeneration of liver tissue. Selenium carries out its main function as part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione peroxidase is an antioxidant that protects intracellular (inside the cell) structures against oxidative damage by free radicals.
